My Review of the AFPA Health Coach Certification Program

8/2/2019

Do you have a love for health and fitness? Are you interested in helping others as well and have no idea where to start? I was in this same boat. There are soooo many programs out there that offer certifications in the wellness space it was tricky to decide which one was the right fit for me. After much research I decided to go with AFPA . If you are interested in possibly becoming a health coach or just interested in learning more about your health and wellness keep reading!

Why I Got started

In 2018 I started my own wellness journey. I was tired of my typical lifestyle of trying to undo all the bad stuff I ate/drank over the weekend by eating some what (of what I thought was clean/ healthy eating) during the week. I always tried each fad diet out there, and always wanted that quick fix to look good for an event, or for that summer bikini. After trying everything from the south beach diet, to keto, to whole 30, to paleo, I came across the All in by Teddi program. Most know Teddi from the Real House Wives of Beverly hills, but she also runs a really great business of accountability coaching combined with a weight loss program. The program was VERY expensive for me, but I had gotten to the point where I tried everything and I wanted to make some changes, so I went for it. The program was really hard, and there were days that I thought I could not do it anymore, but the beauty of this program was having your basically on call health coach. My health coach through the program was the MAIN reason for me as to how I lost that weight I was holding on to. I needed and craved that accountability. Upon completing the program I was so motivated to help others do the same and became more interested in the field of health coaching in general. This combined with the wanting of more knowledge of health and holistic nutrition I sought out certification programs that would give me what I was looking for.

Why AFPA?

I have met a few women that completed or were going through health certifications of their own so I began to look into some. One of the more popular programs that I looked into was the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN). While there were many women who graduated from this program that I look up to in the wellness space (Grabby Bernstein, Elizabeth Stein (purely Elizabeth granola)) I got a crummy feeling about the program when I was pursuing information on it. The program was very expensive to start with (in the 6K-8Krange). That already was making me feel a bit uncomfortable paying for an online program. I also was unsure If this field was the right one for me so committing that much money up front didnt seem like the best decision at the time. Additionally, I felt pressured by the countless emails and calls of trying to persuade me into signing up for the program, by offering discounts that expired pretty quickly If I didnt say yes right away. I decided to take a break from looking into IIN and then was on the hunt for other accredited certification programs that didnt break the bank.

I came across AFPA through a blog a was reading of another health and foodie blogger I follow (I honestly dont remeber which on but it was a great article!) I dug a bit deeper into the program. AFPA Health Coach certifications fully meet the American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP) education requirements, and super well respected in the indutry. Not to mention, the program was under $1500.00 (and even less if you choose to do your reading all online or via an app vs. ordering the course books).

This is so helpful! I am trying to decide between the two programs as well, and leaning towards the AFPA one, for many of the reasons you listed here!

Thank you so much for putting this positive review of AFPA. I’ve been on the hunt for a great wellness coach program for my keto journey. It gets so confusing & overwhelming trying to find a reputable and AFFORDABLE program. I have been hovering over their site trying to find everything I could before pressing the GO button. Now I am passing Go ! No regrets 💯💯🔥🔥🔥🔥

I recently became certified as a Pilates Instructor and have been teaching part time over the past year. It has been very empowering. My full time job has been in sales and it had been a rocky road indeed ( currently unemployed because of Covid-19. I am thinking of using my time while unemployed to pick up credentials more aligned with wellness and Nutrition and expanding it into a full time career ( along with Pilates). Looking at the AFPA "Holistic Health Coach Cert." program. Do you recommend this per my ultimate goal?

Thank you- Mark

Hi Mark. Did you receive your pilates certification through AFPA? I have been looking into their Mat Pilates certification program. Would love to hear feedback, if you did go through them. If not, where did you yours?

Thanks in advance!

Hello!
thanks so much for the info! The website talks of help with business start up and client development help; do you feel you were provided with a lot of support in this regard?
Thanks!

Hi, no problem at all. In terms of helping with business start it will not tell you basic start up info like how to form an llc, tax info, establishing an EIN, ect. This I all learned how to do on google via my states website. You can also hire a tax professional for this. They do give a lot of support in terms of template intake forms, and other various form suggestions if you are thinking about having a practice.

They usually switch up their books due to what is relevant what I really loved about the program you are not reading old literature, think more best sellers. Some of the books I read with the program were : how not to die, and the whole foods diet. Both really informative reads.

Are these books the required reading for the program? I would love a sample of what they teach in their holistic nutrition program but they only offer a guide. I don't want to sign up and not learn more than I already know...

Hi, I'm also looking at a career in the health and wellness industry. I'm coming from corporate as well and no health background. I have 3 questions:
I'm curious to know if you have any cons of the AFPA program? Also, did you feel well prepared afterwards to teach/assist others with the information you learned? It seems it is more reading so I'm wondering the difference between reading the afpa textbooks and just finding your own textbooks. And have you gone on for any other certifications? Thanks for your time!

Hi,

I dont really have any cons of the program. It worked well for my needs but is definitely for someone who can be proactive on their own and doesnt need to be in a classroom type setting to thrive. For me I have always been interested in health and fitness. I started a wellness plan prior to ever going after my certificate to see if it was for me. The certificate program added some great knowledge from the readings but mostly just made me feel more confident in taking on clients because I was "certified". I did not feel comfortable taking on clients that were not friends or acquaintances without a certification...this was all just personal experience. I have began to look into the pre and post natal certification but have not finished it yet. Good Luck on your journey!

Hello,
I've recently become interested in pursuing training as a Health Coach and have had AFPA as one of the options I've been considering. Thank you for your review. I have a question. Do they teach anything on "spirituality" and if so, how do they handle that topic? What things do they teach in that area?

Try Nutraphoria it might be more "holistic".

Hey there. Thank you so much for this review. I have been sailing in the same boat too. As, I have my experience in Yoga as a Yoga instructor and got my certifications from India. This has been such a helpful review. I have been doing research and calls to many health coach programs. I too came across IIN and ACE and APFA and many moreeeee. So, my question is, after you have completed your AFPA Holistic Health Coach certificate, how and do we have to get pay to have an insurance? If YES, please let me know more about that. It will be greatly appreciated!! Thank you.

Thank you so much for this review. I was wondering if I should go with IIN but the cost scared me. AFPA seems to be the best choice and it's affordable too. Thanks again!

Thank you so much for your transparency. I am doing research myself. The ones on my list were IIN, HCI, which I also felt a bit leery of. I felt it was too expensive, more business heavy, and not enough health based. Then I’m looking into Dr. Sears, and thought, this is an actual doctor charging less and give more of what’s needed than the other two. Finally, I stumbled upon AFPA, in a 6 month search, that I’ve never seen nor heard of before. I’m going to check out Dr. Sears, but AFPA seem to be the go to. Thanks so much.

Hi Amber, what did you end up deciding? I've looked into all the same ones and has some similar thoughts. IIN and HCI seem really great, but they are expensive and HCI does seem too business heavy vs nutrition dense. I've been considering take the ACE test for coaching and then taking the AFPA nutrition one to follow it up. Would love your feedback on what you chose.

Thankyou for the review. I was evaluating the AFPA and the IIN and because of the cost differentials was confused. Looks like you enjoyed the learning at AFPA. I might give it a try too.
